Getting dressed in the 1830's

I just happened across this wonderful video:

Getting Dressed in the 1830's

It's a bit later than the period I'm writing just now -- Regency ladies didn't wear so many underclothes, in fact their lack of petticoats was sometimes quite shocking -- but still interesting, particularly for the demonstration of the part played by the lady's maid.

  1. I don't have a real website, just this blog. And a click on the "Books" tab shows that it needs major editing, as my last eleven books aren't even on there. While I'm working on that, might I suggest that you look up my name on Amazon? The frivolous fantasy books are mine, the scholarly ones are by someone else of the same name.

  2. I'm perspiring just watching his lady get dressed! Yikes! Talk about hot flashes...I'd have them starting at age 20 instead of age 50 or 60!

  3. Well, bear in mind it's England. Before central heating! I've found a corresponding video for Regency costume which I'll post in a day or so, and the ladies wear fewer layers -- in fact, I always wonder why those girls in their short-sleeved dresses of thin muslin didn't all die of pneumonia.
